From centuries-old universities to modern campuses, the UK offers a compact, internationally recognised route to a degree. Here is how it works and what the Student visa asks of you.
The United Kingdom is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each runs its own education system, so course structures and funding rules differ, while the Student visa route is administered UK-wide by UK Visas and Immigration.
Degrees are awarded by universities with their own degree-awarding powers. Many courses are shorter than in other countries, which affects both fees and living costs.
General examples only. Actual length depends on the course and institution.
Universities, higher education colleges and further education colleges all offer courses. For visa purposes the provider must be a licensed student sponsor; GOV.UK publishes a register of licensed sponsors for students.
Quality is overseen by separate bodies in each nation, so check the regulator or quality body that applies to the nation where your course is taught.
Universities set their own entry requirements. Typical evidence includes academic transcripts, a personal statement and references. Many ask for an English test; the accepted tests and scores differ between universities.
The visa has its own English rule, covered in the visa section. Meeting a university's English requirement is not the same as meeting the visa requirement.
Overseas fee status applies to most international students, and fees vary widely by university and subject. Always take the figure from the course page of the university you are applying to rather than from an aggregator.
Scholarships exist at university level and through national schemes. Check each university's international scholarships page and national scheme websites for eligibility.
Undergraduate applications are made through UCAS with published deadlines. Postgraduate applications are usually made directly to the university. Apply early enough to receive your offer, meet any conditions and obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) before your visa application.
Admission is not a visa. A university offer does not guarantee a visa. The university decides admission; UK Visas and Immigration decides the visa independently.

The UK's appeal is concentrated in a few concrete things rather than a single headline.
Many bachelor's courses run three years and many master's courses one year, which can reduce total time and cost compared with longer systems.
A large number of universities across four nations offers a wide range of subjects, from research-intensive institutions to specialist and vocational ones.
Many courses offer a placement year or internship option; availability depends on the course and the employer market.
A Graduate visa exists for eligible graduates. Terms are in the visa section; eligibility is never automatic.
Examples only. This is not a ranking and not a list of our partner institutions.
Post-study options depend on your visa history and the rules in force when you apply. Do not plan around an outcome that is not guaranteed.
Student visa (Student route)
Most international students aged 16 or over who study with a licensed student sponsor apply for a Student visa online. You need a CAS from your university before you can apply.
Immigration rules change often. Each fact below shows when it was last checked and where. Figures we could not confirm from an official source are left out on purpose. This page is general guidance, not legal or immigration advice, and nothing here guarantees a visa, employment or post-study work. Most recent check: 23 October 2026.
Accept an unconditional offer and receive your CAS
Your sponsor issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. You must apply within 6 months of receiving it.
Prepare financial and English evidence
Funds must be held for a set period before you apply. English can be shown by a qualification or an approved test, depending on your case.
Apply online and prove your identity
You use the UK Immigration: ID Check app or give biometrics at a visa application centre, depending on your passport and country.
Pay the fee and the healthcare surcharge
The healthcare surcharge depends on how long your visa lasts. Check the current figure on GOV.UK.
Wait for a decision, then collect your eVisa
Successful applicants receive an eVisa and create a UKVI account to access it.
UK rules on financial evidence differ by nationality. Check the GOV.UK Student visa page and the tuberculosis test guidance for your nationality and country of residence.
Bring your academic profile, budget and target intake. We will help you shortlist courses and check your visa documents against the official requirements.
